The outside diameter o. The outside diameter of each pipe must be measured for size identification. Each thread size has a defined number of threads per inch TPI.
Both the TPI threads per inch and OD outside diameter of the thread are required for positive identification of thread size because several sizes have the same TPI. These are the most common threads used for general purposes. NPT threads are used for joining and sealing pipe to fittings in low pressure air or liquids and also mechanical applications.
Tapered threads are deeper at the end of the pipe and are increasingly shallower the further they are from the end of the pipe. The taper on the pipe only allows the pipe to screw inside the fitting until it is forced to stop because of the taper. The distance the pipe can be screwed into the fitting is specified by the ANSI standard.
After tightening with a wrench the threads may have slight spaces between the pipe and fitting which could cause a leak so a pipe sealant must be used to ensure any gaps are filled. NPTF threads are used when the application is such that pipe sealing compounds may fail due to higher heat or pressure than normal NPT threads can withstand.
The threads are designed to seal mechanically by slightly, but sufficiently, crushing the threads when tightened with a wrench. This allows for joining the pipe and fitting without sealants. None of the other thread standards are interchangeable. A washer or gasket is needed to seal this type of threaded connection.

One of the things discussed in that blog post is National Pipe Thread tapered NPT fittings as one of the main types used, but many people have difficulty identifying the correct size NPT fitting for their needs. Makes sense, right?
Hopefully the image below will help. The charts below are from the Swagelok Thread and End Connection Identification Guide with the first chart from page 12 showing dimensions for male NPT threads and the second chart from page 13 containing the dimensions for female NPT threads.

Hookup kits include flexible tubing and compatible fittings to make the connection.
Check your refrigerator's owner's manual or the manufacturer's website for the recommended size and type of water line for your unit.
Installing a refrigerator water line involves tapping into the household cold water supply line at a point close to the refrigerator. Many water line kits include a saddle-type shutoff valve that pierces the supply pipe to get water without soldering or cutting the pipe. Alternatively, you can cut the water line and install a soldered or compression tee with a standard water-supply shutoff valve. You run the tubing to the refrigerator, and then you connect one end to the shutoff valve and the other to the refrigerator by tightening compression fittings.

Customer Service Newsroom Contacts.Specific pipe is identified by pipe diameter and another non-dimensional number for wall thickness referred to as the Schedule Sched.
NPS is often incorrectly called National Pipe Size, due to confusion with the American standard for pipe threads, " national pipe straight ", which also abbreviates as "NPS".
In March the American Standards Association authorized a committee to standardize the dimensions of wrought steel and wrought iron pipe and tubing. However these three sizes did not fit all applications. Also, init was hoped that the designations of STD, XS, and XXS would be phased out by schedule numbers, however those original terms are still in common use today although sometimes referred to as standard, extra-heavy XHand double extra-heavy XXHrespectively.
Since the original schedules were created, there have been many revisions and additions to the tables of pipe sizes based on industry use and on standards from APIASTMand others. Stainless steel pipes, which were coming into more common use in the mid 20th century, permitted the use of thinner pipe walls with much less risk of failure due to corrosion. By thinner schedules 5S and 10S, which were based on the pressure requirements modified to the nearest BWG number, had been created, and other "S" sizes followed later.
Due to their thin walls, the smaller "S" sizes can not be threaded together according to ASME code, but must be fusion welded. Based on the NPS and schedule of a pipe, the pipe outside diameter OD and wall thickness can be obtained from reference tables such as those below, which are based on ASME standards B For a given schedule, the OD increases with NPS while the wall thickness stays constant or increases.
When a pipe is welded or bent the most common method to inspect blockages, misalignment, ovality, and weld bead dimensional conformity is to pass a round ball through the pipe coil or circuit. If the inner pipe dimension is to be measured then the weld bead should be subtracted, if welding is applicable.
Typically, the clearance tolerance for the ball must not exceed 1 millimetre 0. If no other test is conducted to verify ovality, or blockages, this test must be seen as a standard requirement. A flow test can not be used in lieu of a blockage or ball test. Stainless steel pipe is most often available in standard weight sizes noted by the S designation; for example, NPS Sch 10S.
However stainless steel pipe can also be available in other schedules. DN does not exactly correspond to a size in millimeters, because ISO defines it as being a dimensionless specification only indirectly related to a diameter. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
