Post Process Volume and Camera Actor.
Useful Console Variables for Optimization. The following depth of field methods provides a cinematic look that closely resembles photography and film for desktop and console platforms using the Deferred Shading renderer and Clustered Forward renderer. This method uses a procedural Bokeh simulation that provides dynamic resolution stability and alpha channel support while being faster, scalable, and optimized for projects developing on desktop and consoles.
The key to achieving an aesthetically pleasing depth of field effect is all in how the subject s of the shot is focused. There are three core factors that affect setting up Depth of Field for any given shot:.
Let's break down the elements that make up the camera and scene being captured in order to understand what's going on when we adjust these settings:. Take note that the rendered image on the right is inverted through the camera lens. Red is part of the background and more out of focus, Green is part of the foreground and marginally out of focus.
Here we have the multiple points 1 representing objects captured by the camera to a defined Focus Distance 2in this case, the blue subject.

The Aperture 4 defines how blurred objects in the foreground and background will be that is not in focus, and, finally, the Focal Length 5 of the lens controls the field of view, or how zoomed in the image will be. This diagram demonstrates the Diaphragm 2 blocking light passing through the Lens 1.
There are two elements that make up the Aperture; the F-stop number and the Diaphragm. The Aperture is the diameter of the opening through which light passes. The Aperture is defined by Focal Length divided by an F-stop number.
The Diaphragm is the mechanical structure made up of multiple blades used to block light. It opens and closes based on the supplied F-stop. See Focus Distance for a diagram showing this effect. To demonstrate how the Aperture works, drag the slider to change the F-stop number between 1. Smaller F-stop numbers create a shallower DOF with more background and foreground blur.
Larger F-stops increase the depth of DOF with less blur. Note that only the F-stop is being changed here, the Focus Distance and Focal Length remain constant at 7m and 75mm, respectively.
However, in UE4, this is not a real camera, so adjusting the F-stop and Diaphragm does not control the light intensity. The Focal Length is the distance from the center of the lens to the Filmback or image sensor measured in millimeters mm. You can think of the focal length as being similar to zooming in with a camera, except when doing so, the the out-of-focus areas of the shot in the background and foreground are becoming more pronounced.
In the example below, you can see this when changing between a focal length of 50mm and mm; the shot appears mostly in focus throughout the foreground but when using mm focal length, it's easier to see that the background is more out of focus and the foreground has a minimal amount of blur too.
The Focus Distance is the distance from the center of the camera lens to the subject of the shot that is put into focus, creating a focal plane. The closer the camera is to the subject, the more the background will end up out-of-focus. The distance from the Lens 3 to the focal subject 2 - in this case the blue dot - is the Focus Distance.
Areas in the background and foreground are blurred depending on the F-stop used and the Lens Focal Length. To demonstrate how this works, drag the slider to change the Focus Distance between 4m, 7m, and 10m.More results. Hello guys. I use SpiralBlur-SceneTexture function and wish to make material that simulates frosted glass. I guess the blur effect of that function is based upon screen space.
The more the blur intensity is, the error that close to the screen edge is more obvious as shown in below graphics. These visual anomalies will only show up during preview mode. In the Details panel for a placed Background Blur widget, there are a couple of specific options that can be set, which pertain to the Widget:. How blurry the background is. Larger numbers increase blur, resulting in a larger runtime cost on the GPU. An image to draw instead of applying a blur when Low-Quality Override mode is enabled. You can enable Low-Quality Mode for background blurs by setting the cvar Slate.
This is usually done in the project's scalability settings. This is the number of pixels that will be weighted in each direction from any given pixel when computing the blur. A larger value is more costly but allows for stronger blurs. Each of the aforementioned properties can also be set or changed at runtime through Blueprint Script.
The ability to set other appearance settings such as Horizontal and Vertical Alignmentas well as any padding around the Widget, can also be defined. In the following example, we use the Background Blur Widget to highlight a menu when the game is paused, blurring out the background.
For this, we add the Blur Widget with our simplified menu, using the Blur Strength value to determine the strength of background blur being applied. On our Menu Widget Blueprint's Graph, we create a script to handle how our menu reacts to button clicks. Above, when we construct the widget, we are turning on the Mouse Cursor. When the Resume button is pressed, we hide the cursor, un-pause the game, and remove the menu from being displayed.
When the Quit button is pressed, we quit the game. Inside of our player character's Blueprint see belowwe add a script to create and display the menu when a key is pressed. In this case, whenever P is pressed, the game is paused when the menu is displayed. The result is the ability to pause the game and blur the background, keeping our menu intact for players to interact with. We could also decrease the Blur Strength from 50 above down to 10 below to make the background slightly more visible.

I'm currently using a render target texture sample to mask out some areas of my level. It works well, but in order to get the desired effect, I need to ceil the texture sample and then invert it to be used so all pixels are either 0 or 1.
Ideally I'd like to soften the edges after the ceiling of the texture sample where it goes from white to black, but how to do this seems to be escaping me. I know of Spiral Blur - Texture but that only works for a texture object and I don't think I can use that in this case since the UV's of the texture sample are heavily modified? Tags: None. Hello, I'm making progress on my water system and now I'm in need of some advice for adding blur underwater. My underwater effects are all in a post process material because I'm using it to blend between above and below water to get a defined line on screen when partially in the water.
I have tried using a spiral blur, but it makes everything white. I have also found some code for a custom gaussian blur node that takes the scene texture, but there is no input for the strength of the blur. I am not at all versed in hlsl or how to implement it in Unreal, so any help would be appreciated.
I basically need to have a blur node that takes SceneTexture:PostProcessInput0 and blurs it with the ability to control it's strength. Here are the images of my post process material. I broke it up into various shots so you can see whats going on. I would like to add a blur under water as well as a strong blur for the water line itself. The line is currently just a black bar that sort of covers the clipping of the water plane.
It would look much better with some blurring or distortion. Can you give me an example of what you want the end result to look like?
Also have you tried enabling and adjusting Depth of Field in your post process volume? I need a node that I can feed in scene texture:postprocess input:0, blur it, and use it to lerp into my under water effects, as well as my water line to hide the sharpness of the near clip plane.
